NV (2016-2023) Weingut Schatzel, Reh Solera, Rheinhessen, Germany - PRE ARRIVAL

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

The Schätzel family has been farming the red slate slopes of the Roter Hang for over six centuries. Across generations, their philosophy has remained constant: “Give nature her space.” In practice, this means hand-farming steep, biodynamic vineyards, letting fermentations unfold on their own, and aging wines slowly, patiently, under the vaulted stone ceilings of their 800-year-old cellar.

Reh Solera is one of their most ambitious expressions yet. Named for the historic Rehbach vineyard within Pettenthal, this wine is composed of 15 barrels of untouched riesling from eight consecutive vintages, 2016 through 2023. Each barrel was fermented and aged separately, under flor, for as long as eight years. In 2024, they were blended for the first time into a singular cuvée, bottled by hand and accompanied by a companion book of poetry, notes, and reflections from the eight-year journey.

Stylistically, Reh draws inspiration from multiple traditions: the oxidative flor aging of the Jura, the autolysis of vintage Champagne, and the deep complexity of solera-aged sherry. But the result is unmistakably Schätzel: riesling reimagined with clarity, structure, and mineral depth.

It opens with notes of salt-preserved lemon, ginger, and toasted hazelnut, backed by a flinty core and subtle oxidative lift. The palate is savory and mouthwatering, with a creamy texture balanced by acidity and salinity. It’s dense but agile, layered but lifted providing an unfolding meditation on time, terroir, and trust in the glass.

Trust us when we say these are the wines that make us giddy when we get to share them. Just 1,200 bottles were made. Each one hand-numbered and unequivocally remarkable.
