NV Roc d'Anglade, Reserva Especial N°11, Vin de Pays Gard , France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

In 1999, IT engineer Rémy Pédreno moved to the Languedoc with his wife Martine. His goal: make wine. His first vintage was vinified in his parents’ garage. Now, his wines are some of the most sought-after in France, both critically acclaimed and nearly instantly sold out upon release.

How did this happen? Visits to some of the best winemakers in France, and training under René Rostaing in Côte-Rôtie. His land, around nine hectares farmed biodynamically, features a diversity of unique soil compositions. To protect his grapes from the famously powerful sun in this region, many plots face east or north. But, ultimately, "the key to success,” he says, “is hard work, even fanatical work in the vineyard.”

And, while everything Rémy makes is special, his Reserva Especial is a masterwork. Inspired by a Spanish tradition of blending the best of past vintages to create a wine that represents the best of the estate, this blend of carignan, mourvedre, genache noir, syrah, and cinsault is an almost-dizzying gestalt of Remy’s hard-earned mastery. Notes from warmer and cooler vintages blend seamlessly—sun-warmed huckleberry, blueberry, elderberry, star anise, ceylon cinnamon, garrigue, violet, and well-loved leather—all interwoven with powerful, but elegant tannin. A wine as captivating as it is singular.
