NV Benoît Déhu, Cuvée La Rue des Noyers, Champagne, France (2019)

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Benoit Déhu is an eighth-generation vigneron of Champagne. He spent a defining period working in the cellars of Bollinger and afterwards returned home to his family’s pre-French Revolution estate in the Vallée de la Marne. His focus has been on a 1.7 hectare plot called La Rue des Noyers which he farms biodynamically, going so far as to plough the rows by horse. He has a passion to deeply understand the pinot meunier grape and he makes several sparkling wines from his plot on La Rue as well as a white and red Coteaux Champenois. His Champagnes are made with tremendous care in extremely limited quantities.

The Cuvée La Rue des Noyers is pinot meunier from a single biodynamically farmed vineyard in Fossoy, on the western edge of the Vallée de la Marne. Named for the walnut trees lining the parcel, the wine ferments in oak barrels made from local forest wood and ages 36–40 months sur lattes before disgorgement with zero dosage. Quietly powerful and deeply mineral, this cuvée hums with citrus confit, white pepper, and slate, delivering both tension and nuance in every sip.
