2023 Olivier Bernstein, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Grand Cru, Bugundy, FR

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

This wine is a pre-arrival with an estimated arrival of late Fall 2025.

From Burgundy micro-producer to cult hero to record-breaking icon in twenty years...meteoric hardly touches the rise of Olivier Bernstein’s star. Today, his are among the most sought-after Burgundies in the market, commanding prices at auction on par with Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Olivier’s quick success can in some part be credited to his willingness to bet on himself, often in surprising and radical terms. In 2007, he left a successful career in business with his heart set on making wine. Not just wine – Burgundy. Initially, no one would sell fruit to him, so he made a wild gamble: in exchange for contracts, he would pay the owners of premier and grand cru vineyards for their entire harvest in advance — regardless of the yield — and farm the vines himself.

“To me what was important was to farm myself, we do not consider ourselves as negociants,” he said in an interview with Elin McCoy. “I offered to pay them in advance the total yield they could have on their plot, but the condition was, I wanted to farm myself.” He told the owners, “I will pay you now, two years in advance, the maximum yield you can produce...the rest is my problem.”

Fate smiled on Olivier. Between the trust he earned from the vineyard owners, and the accolades given for his tiny production of exquisite wines, he was able to finally purchase his own corner of Burgundy. The wines themselves remind us of why Olivier worked so hard, at such risk, to find footing in the region.

In our estimation, no Burgundy collection is complete without an entry under Olivier’s name. Unfortunately for collectors, his production has not kept pace with his fame, and as is the case with many of our French favorites, tasting his wines has become an increasingly elusive experience.  We are thrilled to offer members of the Yes Society the opportunity to do so today.
