After 22 vintages quietly shaping the wines at his family’s Domaine Bernard Moreau, Benoît Moreau stepped into the spotlight in 2020 with a domaine of his own. He brought with him 4.2 hectares of prized vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin—parcels he had farmed for decades, now tended biodynamically and entirely by hand, horse, or small tractor. A patient, intuitive grower, Benoît favors tressage over hedging, native yeasts over control, and time over intervention. His whites are pressed gently and raised over two winters with little new oak. His reds are perfumed, silken, and shaped by a light touch. The wines hum with clarity and tension, an unmistakable signature from one of Burgundy’s most compelling new voices.
In 2021, Moreau extended his reach south to Beaujolais, acquiring 1.7 hectares of old-vine gamay in Beaujolais-Villages, Chiroubles, and Morgon. These wines are bottled under the L’Arlésienne label, named for the elusive figure in Provençal lore—always spoken of, never seen. Farmed organically and vinified with the same restrained sensibility as his Burgundies, the Beaujolais wines are made with partial whole-cluster fermentations, native yeasts, and élevage in stainless steel, amphora, or large neutral casks. While the vessels differ, the philosophy remains the same: wines of nuance and transparency, guided more by place and instinct than by recipe.
The 2023 Châtenay comes from a southeast-facing, half-hectare parcel on the border of Morgon, where pink granite soils lend lift and energy to gamay’s natural charm. Fermentation was spontaneous, with whole-cluster inclusion and no punch-downs, just a gentle infusion. After 12 months in amphora, the wine was racked to stainless steel for a short rest before bottling, unfined and unfiltered.
Bright and fragrant, this is Chiroubles in its purest register: high-toned, red-fruited, and mineral. Delicate in structure but persistent in detail, it’s a wine that trades in lightness without losing depth.
