François’ Mikulski’s father, Lieutenant Mieczyslaw Mikulski, escaped from occupied Poland in 1939. Fleeing to England, he joined the Resistance troops of the Free Polish Forces. He met his wife, a Burgundy native, working on an English army base, and they moved together to Brussels, where François was born. François spent his formative summers in Burgundy and fell in love with the pastoral lifestyle—his dream of making wine was born. He inherited his first vines in Meursault in 1992 and has since pursued his vision of an authentic, pure Meursault. François Mikulski is a practitioner of lutte raisonnée, employing the most natural and organic vineyard practices possible. The grapes are harvested meticulously and destemmed before a light pressing and full débourbage. After fermentation, the wines are racked into 20% new oak barrels, where they undergo malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging.
From two family-owned parcels planted in 1947 and 1976, this premier cru pinot noir comes from the heart of Santenots du Milieu—Volnay’s southern stronghold in the commune of Meursault. The soils here are brown silt over fractured bedrock with excellent water retention, contributing to small yields and concentrated fruit. The wine is fermented with ambient yeast, aged 14 months in barrel (35% new), then finished in tank to preserve lift and purity. This is a deeply expressive Volnay, with fine tannins and fresh acidity. A wine of poise and power, built to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.
