François’ Mikulski’s father, Lieutenant Mieczyslaw Mikulski, escaped from occupied Poland in 1939. Fleeing to England, he joined the Resistance troops of the Free Polish Forces. He met his wife, a Burgundy native, working on an English army base, and they moved together to Brussels, where François was born. François spent his formative summers in Burgundy and fell in love with the pastoral lifestyle—his dream of making wine was born. He inherited his first vines in Meursault in 1992 and has since pursued his vision of an authentic, pure Meursault. François Mikulski is a practitioner of lutte raisonnée, employing the most natural and organic vineyard practices possible. The grapes are harvested meticulously and destemmed before a light pressing and full débourbage. After fermentation, the wines are racked into 20% new oak barrels, where they undergo malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging.
“Limozin” lies just below premier cru Les Genevrières, a tiny 0.15-hectare plot planted in the 1950s and farmed with organic methods. The soil here is heavier than in many neighboring sites, composed of fine alluvial river sediment with less limestone, giving the wine a broad, grounding structure. Depending on the vintage, this plot may be bottled on its own or folded into the village Meursault. When vinified separately, Limozin reveals a chardonnay of generosity and quiet power. The wine is textured and silky, but beneath the richness, a hint of minerality adds focus and lift. It’s a wine of depth and calm persistence, more structure than flash.
