François’ Mikulski’s father, Lieutenant Mieczyslaw Mikulski, escaped from occupied Poland in 1939. Fleeing to England, he joined the Resistance troops of the Free Polish Forces. He met his wife, a Burgundy native, working on an English army base, and they moved together to Brussels, where François was born. François spent his formative summers in Burgundy and fell in love with the pastoral lifestyle—his dream of making wine was born. He inherited his first vines in Meursault in 1992 and has since pursued his vision of an authentic, pure Meursault. François Mikulski is a practitioner of lutte raisonnée, employing the most natural and organic vineyard practices possible. The grapes are harvested meticulously and destemmed before a light pressing and full débourbage. After fermentation, the wines are racked into 20% new oak barrels, where they undergo malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging.
This premier cru chardonnay comes from “Genevrières,” a revered east-facing site on the Meursault slope. Mikulski has worked this parcel—0.53 hectares of 50-year-old vines—on a sharecropping basis since 1992. The soils are just 30 cm deep, composed of limestone gravel over a fractured rock bed, with brown silt filtering between the plates below. This layered geology allows the roots to delve deep, with optimal water retention—a key to the wine’s precision and power.
Among the Mikulski range, Genevrières is the bottling with the greatest cellaring potential. It’s a wine of depth and composure, combining richness with exacting detail. Structured and expansive, with chiseled acidity, supple texture, and a resonant finish that carries both freshness and gravitas.
