We're thrilled to offer the first wines from Jean Marshall, a new domaine in Burgundy working 1.45 hectares across Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges in a way that honors the region's ethos without being bound by its conventions. After working with Burgundy legend Charles Lachaux, Marshall set out on his own. Lachaux tipped off his distributor, the iconic Becky Wasserman, whose portfolio now holds these beauties.
Marshall farms organically with a distinctive approach: no-till viticulture, rolled cover crops instead of plowing, vines braided rather than hedged. Perhaps the most unusual aspect is his use of sandstone vessels for aging. Every wine, both white and red, is aged in ceramic (and sometimes stainless steel) with no oak whatsoever. This choice, virtually unprecedented for premier cru Burgundy, means no toast, no wood spice, no barrel tannins. Instead, a raw and crystalline expression of grape and place. T
his parcel sits at the outlet of the Combe de Chambolle, a narrow valley that channels cool air down from the plateau at night, preserving bright acidity and aromatic lift. After 23 months in sandstone, the wine shows ripe cherry, graphite, and flint with notes of damask rose petal throughout the long, mineral finish, plus a sprinkling of dusty tannins. Elegant and compelling.
