2023 Domaine de Bellevue / Jérôme Bretaudeau, Statera, Loire Valley, France - PRE ARRIVAL

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Jérôme Bretaudeau is one of the Loire’s most compelling iconoclasts and an avant-garde force in Muscadet. Where tradition says “melon or bust,” he replies with pinot noir, merlot, savagnin, and concrete eggs. Since founding Domaine de Bellevue in 2001, he’s quietly redefined what’s possible in this oyster-loving corner of the Loire, farming biodynamically across 15 hectares of granite- and gabbro-rich soils and vinifying with a fearless sense of experimentation. From extended lees aging to amphorae, skin contact, and harvests organized by vine age to better understand each plant’s personality, his wines challenge convention at every turn.

Take Statera, for instance: a Burgundian dream realized from pinot noir grown in the Pays Nantais. This rarity, rooted in granite flecked with pink and white quartz, is floral and vivid with peony and rose on the nose, ripe cherry and wild strawberry on the palate, and a fine-boned frame and herb-tinged finish. It’s a singular expression of pinot noir from unexpected origins with unmistakable in character. This is the wine that helped cement the cult following of a visionary winemaker.
