2023 Domaine de Bellevue / Jérôme Bretaudeau, Macération, Loire Valley, France - PRE ARRIVAL

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Jérôme Bretaudeau is one of the Loire’s most compelling iconoclasts and an avant-garde force in Muscadet. Where tradition says “melon or bust,” he replies with pinot noir, merlot, savagnin, and concrete eggs. Since founding Domaine de Bellevue in 2001, he’s quietly redefined what’s possible in this oyster-loving corner of the Loire, farming biodynamically across 15 hectares of granite- and gabbro-rich soils and vinifying with a fearless sense of experimentation. From extended lees aging to amphorae, skin contact, and harvests organized by vine age to better understand each plant’s personality, his wines challenge convention at every turn.

From a small vineyard of pinot gris planted in the early 2000s on the same pink and white granite and quartz soils as Perrières and La Justice, this is Jérôme’s exploration into skin-contact white wine. The grapes ferment on their skins for two to three weeks in concrete tanks before moving to a mix of large and medium oak barrels and amphorae for 12 to 14 months. A thoughtful, quietly expressive take on the skin-contact—or 'orange wine'—tradition.
