2023 BiNaume, La Plante d'à Côté, Saint-Pourçain, VdF, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

La Plante d’à Côté—the plant next door—is the pinot noir counterpart to BiNaume’s gamay. Born of resilience and shaped by intention, it’s the result of a quiet detour taken by two of Burgundy’s most respected voices: Claire Naudin and Jean-Yves Bizot. After the catastrophic frost of 2016, the couple looked beyond the Côte d’Or and found themselves in Saint-Pourçain, 200 km west, where old vines grow in sandy soils instead of limestone. This wine is their response to this place—vibrant, transparent, and full of grace.

The fruit comes from vines up to 70 years old, hand-harvested and transported in a refrigerated truck back to the domaine in Magny-les-Villers. It’s fermented whole cluster in concrete without sulfur, pressed early to preserve freshness, aged for 10 months in used barrique, and bottled unfiltered.

On the nose, La Plante d’à Côté floats in with red cherry, peony, and pink peppercorn. The palate is lifted and tensile, with bright raspberry and a mineral snap—pinot noir that feels high-toned and clear-eyed, built more for charm than weight. It’s bistro wine in the best sense: precise, unpretentious, and undeniably pleasurable. Serve at cellar temperature with a good chill and a better companion. Like all things from Bizot and Naudin, this is made with care and made to be shared.
