2022 Vaira Aurelj, Controcorrente Rose, Vino Rosso, Italy

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

In the quiet hills of Vergne, nestled between Barolo, La Morra, and Narzole, stands Azienda Agricola Vaira Francesco, a testament to the enduring love of land and tradition. Here, amidst the undulating vineyards, two brothers, Francesco and Giacomo, carry on the legacy bequeathed to them by their father, who passed more than two decades ago. They honor him in the soil and the vine, not merely through their toil but in naming their wines “Aurelj,” a tribute to the dialect of their home, and to his given name, Aurelio.

Their vineyards, a patchwork of micro-plots, are poised at an altitude of 450 meters, where the earth itself carries a particular alchemy—limestone and clay, sun-drenched under a southeastern and southwestern exposure. Some of these plots fall within the Barolo DOCG, while others lie just beyond its boundaries, yet all are unified by the brothers' unyielding commitment to their craft.

Francesco and Giacomo see the vineyard as both mirror and muse, their wines a direct expression of the land’s dialogue with the seasons. Ethical and sustainable practices are the foundation of their work, and compromise, they say, is a word they do not know. In their quest for quality, every stage of production bears the mark of thoughtful intention.

This fledgling estate, though small in scope, carries the weight of deep-rooted tradition and a future bright with promise, offering to the world the rare and intimate fruits of a land tended with devotion and care.
