2022 Eric Boigelot, Volnay, Santenots, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

The Boigelot family has been growing grapes in the Côte de Beaune since 1918. Their cellars in Meursault sit next door to Coche-Dury, to whom they have long supplied fruit. Both Éric and his son Charles trained alongside the Coche family. Charles, who took over winemaking in 2022, has quickly become one of Burgundy’s most closely watched young vignerons.

Santenots is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most interesting vineyards. It lies within the commune of Meursault, but because it is planted almost entirely to pinot noir, it carries the name Volnay Premier Cru. The soils are rich in clay and limestone, redder and harder than in most of Volnay, with a high iron content that lends the wines a unique richness and body. The vineyard faces southeast on a gradual slope. The fruit is hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented in tank on indigenous yeasts, with twelve months in oak barrels and a light filtration before bottling.

Raspberry and red cherry on the nose, lifted by violet and a dusting of white pepper. The palate is silken, supple red fruit over fine-grained tannin, with an undertow of iron and damp clay that grounds the elegance and carries it through a long, savory finish.
