2022 Edi Simčič, Fojana Sauvignon, Goriška Brda, Slovenia

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

The Simčič family had been farming the hills of Goriška Brda decades before Edi and his wife Marica bottled their first vintage in 1989. Today, their son Aleks and grandsons Jure and Jakob tend 13 hectares of steep, sun-drenched slopes across three villages, farming sustainably on the region’s signature opoka soils featuring layers of calcareous sandstone, marl, and clay that lend a distinctive salinity. Yields average just 700 grams per vine, around a half-bottle per plant.

Fojana Sauvignon is sourced from a half-hectare parcel of 36-year-old vines at Srednji Kos, a south- and west-facing plot on alluvial marl and clay. After a 2-hour maceration and native-yeast fermentation, the wine ages 11 months in used barrel followed by 18 months in bottle before release. 2022 is precise despite the vintage’s warmth, with notes of white grapefruit, crushed chalk, fresh sage, and a seemingly electric currant of minerality throughout. Only about 650 bottles produced.
