2022 Domaine Roulot, Meursault, Les Meix Chavaux, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

If you want to see a Burgundy lover light up, mention Jean-Marc Roulot. Though Domaine Roulot has been a standard-bearer in the region shortly since its founding in 1830, Jean-Marc (at the helm since the 1980s) is famous for championing terroir expression by way of pure, perfectly ripe fruit. There are few wines and winemakers more iconic. Today the domaine is revered for its precise interpretations of Meursault’s slope, shaped by old vines, organic farming since 1989, and highly detailed cellar work that reveals each site with exceptional clarity.

Les Meix Chavaux is one of Meursault’s historically significant lieux-dits, a term used in Burgundy to identify long-established vineyard parcels with distinct histories, exposures, and soils. Its name is derived from “meix,” meaning land around a farmhouse, and “chavaux,” a reference to the small valley leading toward the village. Located northeast of Meursault toward Auxey-Duresses, the vineyard combines calcareous clay at its base with rockier soils higher up, creating a profile that brings a natural generosity and lift to wines from the site. In 2022, the site’s balanced water retention and exposure contributed to ideal phenolic ripeness, producing a wine with firm definition and elegant tension. It underscores the strength of Roulot’s lieux-dits, offering a level of refinement and completeness that approaches the profile traditionally associated with premier cru sites.
