2022 Domaine Jean-Marc Bouley, Volnay, Clos de Chênes, 1er cru

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Pommard has long carried a reputation for brawn—a village defined by muscular, tannic reds that demand patience and time. But at Domaine Jean-Marc Bouley, Thomas Bouley is quietly reshaping that narrative, crafting wines that reflect not only the power of the terroir but its elegance, precision, and energy. A ninth-generation steward of this 9-hectare estate, Thomas’s work is marked by patience and an uncompromising focus on balance, both in the vineyard and the glass.

For Thomas, the vineyard tells the story. His philosophy centers on creating a thriving ecosystem—soils full of life, vines that grow with intention, and fruit that speaks clearly of its origins. After two decades of work, 2020 marked a turning point: the vines, both young and old, had reached their equilibrium. This careful stewardship reveals itself in the 2022s—wines of remarkable harmony and detail, embodying the quiet confidence of a domaine that knows its strengths.

The Bouley estate also makes (spectacular!) wine in Volnay, and though their terroir expressions are quite different, Thomas’s wines all carry a signature elegance that’s quietly awe-inspiring. Whether you’re a die-hard Pommard drinker or not, this wine offers the chance to experience this region afresh, finding new profundity in wait.
