While the name Cesare Bussolo may be new to you, his work won't be. Cesare has spent most of his winemaking life as the right-hand man to Roberto Voerzio, whose wines are among the most sought-after in Barolo. In 2009, Cesare purchased his first vineyards in La Morra, and over time, added generous leases—including plots once under Voerzio's own care. He brings the same rigor to his own work: organic farming, high-density planting, multiple green harvests, and precision in the cellar. The result? Wines that echo Voerzio's in their seamless balance of power and grace while carrying Cesare's understated signature.
La Serra, on the southern side of La Morra at 350 meters, is one of the commune's most storied crus, made famous by Voerzio in the 1990s. Its sandy soil, threaded with stones and fossils, yields wines of finesse over sheer force. Cesare made his first La Serra in 2020, and it has quickly become a highlight of his range.
The wine ages 24 months in small barrels. Serious and beautiful even in youth, it will gain warmth and depth with time, and Cesare believes 25 to 30 years of cellaring is within reach. Today it offers black cherry, river rock, violet leaf, ground venison, and a freshly-rained-upon rosebush, its muscular frame drawn tight by fine-grained tannin and a finish that turns savory and stony as it lingers.
