2022 Bérêche et Fils, Ormes Rouge les Montes, Coteaux Champenois, Champagne, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche are synonymous with Champagne’s most expressive and quietly coveted wines. Born into a family with winemaking roots stretching back to the 1800s, the brothers joined their father Jean-Pierre in 2004, quickly earning a reputation for their near-obsessive dedication to quality. A team of ten tends their nine hectares biodynamically, with each parcel vinified and aged separately in barrel. Even en tirage, bottles are sealed under cork—a rarity—and each one is hand disgorged. They maintain a solera of sorts, begun in 1985, carefully drawing off two-thirds each year and replenishing it anew. It’s little wonder that their wines have become some of Champagne’s most coveted.

Here, we glimpse their rare coteaux champenois—a still pinot noir crafted only in the ripest years, when select parcels insist on telling a story beyond bubbles. Burgundy may come to mind, but this wine is undeniably, resolutely Champagne.
