Benjamin Leroux is widely recognized as one of the most gifted vignerons of the new generation in Burgundy. With each vintage, he demonstrates a deep commitment to meticulous vineyard care, embracing biodynamic and organic viticulture whenever possible. Working with both his own vines and carefully sourced parcels, Leroux produces around fifty cuvées each year, treating each plot with respect and precision. “It takes more time and energy to work these plots,” Leroux says, “but it fills me with energy too—touching so many different terroirs. I never feel as though I’m wasting my time.”
The 2022 Meursault-Blagny, La Pièce-sous-le-Bois 1er Cru is a stunning expression of chardonnay, sourced from high-elevation vineyards where limestone gravel and white marl soils lend tension and minerality to the wine. The cooler microclimate at this altitude brings vibrancy, while the rich soils provide depth and texture. Aromas of ripe pear, citrus zest, white flowers, and a delicate hint of toasted almonds rise from the glass. On the palate, it unfolds with a silky texture balanced by bright acidity, revealing flavors of baked apple, lemon curd, and a gentle touch of oak spice. A mineral undertone runs throughout, leading to a long, elegant finish with a refreshing saline lift.
Leroux crafts this premier cru with a combination of stainless steel and oak fermentation, followed by aging in fine French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while maintaining clarity and freshness. The 2022 La Pièce-sous-le-Bois encapsulates both the richness for which Meursault is known and the finesse imparted by the vineyard’s elevated position.
