Founded in 1962 by André and Mireille Tissot, their namesake domaine has become one of the most dynamic estates in the Jura under the vision of their son Stéphane. After taking over in 1989 at the age of 19, Stéphane quickly abandoned commercial yeasts and led the move to organic farming, inspired in part by Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard. Certified organic in 1999 and biodynamic since 2004, the estate now farms with massale selections and deep attention to terroir, producing as many as 28 cuvées parcel by parcel. With Bénédicte by his side, Stéphane has helped lead the Jura’s dramatic resurgence.
The Jura itself is one of France’s most distinctive wine regions, a patchwork of limestone and marl soils nestled between Burgundy and Switzerland. Long known for its traditional styles, from oxidative whites to pale, perfumed reds, the region has become a hotbed of innovation while honoring centuries of history. Tissot stands at the forefront of this revival, showing just how compelling and diverse Jura wines can be.
Sous la Tour is one of the great sites of the Tissot estate, a terraced limestone vineyard near the historic Tour de Curon in Arbois. Farmed biodynamically and plowed by horse, it is planted entirely to pinot noir, harvested by hand, and fermented with 100% whole clusters using native yeasts in open oak vats. The wine is then aged in barrel for two years before bottling, allowing both structure and nuance to develop.
The 2022 vintage is ripe but balanced, a pinot noir shaped as much by limestone as by fruit. Aromas of redcurrant, pomegranate, and wild berries unfold with notes of spice and dried flowers. On the palate, it is vivid and textural, the fine tannins carrying both freshness and depth. The limestone soils impart lift and definition, giving the wine both energy and a long, resonant finish. Structured yet graceful, Sous la Tour is one of the most refined and ageworthy reds of the Jura.
