2022 Bass Phillip, Estate, Pinot Noir, Gippsland, Australia

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip in South Gippsland in 1979, inspired by the wines of Henri Jayer. He spent four decades making some of Australia's most Burgundian pinot noir and chardonnay on a northeast-facing block of volcanic soil at Leongatha. In 2020, he sold to Jean-Marie Fourrier of Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey-Chambertin, who trained under Jayer himself and worked his legendary 1988 harvest.

A wet, cool spring in 2022 brought disease pressure during flowering and cut yields by roughly half. What remained was concentrated fruit that ripened well through a better summer and autumn. This is the first vintage fully under Fourrier’s stewardship.

Rosehips and wild blueberries on the nose, with dark cherry, cocoa, and a hint of saucisson sec. Finely integrated tannin and bright acidity through the long, winding finish. 96 points from critic James Suckling.
