2021 Paolo and Giampiero Bea, Cotidie, Umbria Rosso IGT, Umbria, IT

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Azienda Agricola Paolo Bea sits in the hills around Montefalco, where the Bea family has lived and farmed since the 1500s. This is a true Umbrian fattoria, a place where vineyards, olive trees, orchards, grains, animals, and family life are woven together in a way that feels timeless. The estate carries a sense of continuity that is almost disarming, as if the land itself shapes the rhythm of each day. Paolo Bea’s conviction that nature should be observed, listened to, and never dominated gives the wines a presence that feels both ancient and deeply personal.

Today, Paolo’s sons, Giuseppe and Giampiero, carry that ethos forward with a devotion that can be felt in every bottle. The vineyards are tended with the same patience and humility that defined their father’s work, and the wines that emerge are unmistakably of this place. They are wild, expressive, full of pulse and emotion, and they remain some of the most meaningful bottles within our cellars, on our tables, and in our memories. These are wines that continually inspire us and create reference points vintage after vintage.

Cotidie is the most immediately inviting red in the Bea cellar, conceived as a wine for daily pleasure, yet rendered with the same fidelity to land and tradition that defines the estate’s grander bottlings. Its name, Latin for “everyday,” pays homage to ancient practices, most notably the co-fermentation of red and white grapes grown side by side. Here, sagrantino and trebbiano ferment together with native yeasts, a choice that lends the wine both lift and texture and places it in that liminal space between a dark rosato and a feather-light red.

The 2021 is vibrant and expressive, offering red cherry, pomegranate, plum skin, wild herbs, and a gentle rustic spice that recalls sagrantino’s deeper register, yet the frame remains soft and open. Fine tannins and a refreshing, food-friendly structure keep the wine nimble, making it as well suited to a simple weeknight meal as it is to a long table surrounded by friends. Cotidie is honest, soulful, and utterly drinkable, and serves as a reminder for us that the most uncomplicated wines can sometimes offer the clearest window into a place.
