Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux and Domaine Charles Lachaux
Same hands. Different intent.
At a glance, these two labels bear the same last name, the same cellar, and the same guiding mind. But look closer and you’ll find two distinct worlds—one rooted in legacy, the other in personal conviction.
Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux is the estate: a historic 14.5-hectare domaine stewarded today by Charles Lachaux, whose quiet revolution in the vineyard has transformed the family’s already respected holdings into some of the most sought-after wines in Burgundy. With regenerative farming, vertical pressing, and whole-cluster fermentations, Charles has elevated these wines into a new class.
In the rarefied air of Burgundy’s grands crus, Romanée-Saint-Vivant stands as a pinnacle of sensuality and precision. And at Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, Charles Lachaux has transformed his family’s historic parcel into one of the vineyard’s most thrilling expressions. Just 40 meters below Romanée-Conti and flanked by La Tâche and La Grande Rue, this 0.35-hectare strip of 95-year-old vines is a masterclass in place and potential.
Farming here is a study in devotion: organic and biodynamic methods, horse-plowed rows, Poussard pruning, and zero trimming—every shoot is trained by hand into looping arcs, maximizing light and life. Vinified with 100% whole clusters, the 2021 spent 14 months in barrel (30% new), followed by two months in tank before bottling.
The result is a Romanée-Saint-Vivant of intensity and structure—black cherry, dark rose, crushed spice, and iron-rich earth. Less ethereal than some interpretations, this is a wine that wears its tension proudly, shaped by minuscule yields, muscular old vines, and the cool lift of the vintage. It’s a wine that demands both time and attention, and one that will reward both deeply.
Jasper Morris MW has called it the “quintessence of Vosne-Romanée.” And in 2021, it may also be the quintessence of Charles Lachaux: grounded, focused, and fearlessly exacting.
