2020 Adega a Barouta, As Penas, Riberio, Galacia, Spain

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

We are the only place in the United States where you can taste O Penedo and As Penas. Adega A Barouta is the collaborative vision of Daniel Landi and Fernando García (of Comando G) and Javier Alen (of Viña Mein)—a project that had been quietly percolating for years before they took the leap to establish a winery in 2020. Winemaker Roberto Núñez, whose hands have long been in the cellars of Comando G, now steers the helm.

A Barouta is rooted in Ribeira, Galicia, where they have amassed a collection of truly exceptional vineyards—ancient, terraced rows of indigenous varietals, some of the oldest in the region. The vines, farmed organically, sit in a rare pocket of terroir, sheltered from Galicia’s relentless rains by northern mountains, while cool Atlantic nights lend the wines their signature tension.

Working with only indigenous yeasts, they rely on gentle pigéage to guide the fermentations, keeping extractions delicate. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, allowing their purity and quiet complexity to shine. Light on their feet but deeply expressive, they carry the history of their land with elegance and ease.

As Penas comes from just two hectares of 60-year-old vines in Val do Avia, rooted in granite at 200 meters of elevation. The blend is led by treixadura (55%), with albariño (20%) and a scattering of caiño blanco and loureira rounding out the composition.

Grapes are hand-selected and pressed whole-cluster with the utmost care. Fermentation unfolds naturally with indigenous yeasts in wooden barrels, followed by 16 months of aging in 500-liter barrels. Production is minuscule—only 600 bottles were made this vintage.

This wine is all shimmery green tea, lime, late light, nectarine, and small round river stones rolling on your tongue, the body is lithe and dynamic.
