2019 Weingut Beck, Eichert, Baden, Germany

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Charlotte and David Beck returned to David’s father’s farm in Jechtingen in 2013, after studies at Geisenheim and time spent working harvests abroad. Working fewer than two hectares of vines on the volcanic soils of the Kaiserstuhl, the Becks farm with meticulous hand labor — no tractors, no tilling since 2018, treating their vines with copper, sulfur, and homemade herbal preparations, and intervening as little as possible in the cellar. Biodiversity is paramount. Insect hotels are dotted throughout their plots. Charlotte brought expertise in organic viticulture; David has worked alongside some of Baden's most respected producers. Together they make between 2,000 and 3,000 bottles a year.

The 2019 Eichert from Weingut Beck is a wine shaped by one of Baden's most distinctive vineyard sites. Perched on the volcanic slopes above Jechtingen, Eichert faces southeast and southwest, drinking in light through the warmest hours of the day. The vines work through soils of volcanic loam and weathered tephrite, their roots tracing the same ancient geological forces that give this corner of the Kaiserstuhl its gravitas. The volcanic soils lend characteristic depth and tension, while the southeast- and southwest-facing orientation lends ripeness.

In the glass, the 2019 Eichert, from pinot noir vines approaching 40 years old, opens with a luminous core of dark cherry and ripe raspberry, woven with notes of dried sage, warm stone, and a dusting of baking spice. The palate is layered and intricate, with a velvety texture and tannins that speak more of silk than grip. Beneath the fruit, a quiet mineral core—that volcanic signature—carries through to a lightly smoky finish.
