“We produce muscular wines,” says Hanspeter Ziereisen, winemaker and owner at Weingut Ziereisen near the border of Alsace and Switzerland. “Not sumo wrestlers but decathletes; smooth, elegant, strong, and athletic.”
The name 10^4 is a nod to what you might call their training regimen—at least 10,000 vines planted per hectare, meaning the vines are in competition for nutrients. As such, the vines send their roots more deeply into the ground, creating more focused, mineral-driven wines. A segment of their production only made during exceptional vintages, 10^4 is something rare and special.
From vines planted on Jurassic limestone between 1958 to 1965, this elegant yet concentrated pinot noir opens with a bouquet of tea rose and cherry blossoms, layered over red currants and wild strawberries, with freshly broken limestone. This wine has enormous charm now but could be aged for a decade or longer with breathtaking results.
The integrity of your wine is our highest concern. Orders placed during the summer months will be put on hold and fulfilled as soon as temperatures permit. Learn more here.
