2018 Pierre Yves Colin-Morey, Saint Aubin, Cuvee Marguerite, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Pierre-Yves Colin’s wines are god-tier, alongside other Burgundian deities such as Jean-Marc Roulot and Jean-Francois Coche-Dury. Working with his wife Caroline Morey and their sons Mathis and Clément, they grow 70% of their grapes themselves and source otherwise from highly trusted neighbors (and only from those who will harvest on the dates he stipulates). They use new oak sparingly and 350-liter barrels instead of the standard 228 liters. They do not engage in batonnage, fining, or filtering. Their wines offer clarity, precision, and frankly, bottled magic.

Cuvee Marguerite, a luminous offering first made in 2016 to commemorate the passing of Pierre’s grandmother Marguerite, is a combination of three premier crus: Combes, Créot and Perrières. Awarded a 93 score from James Suckling, it offers notes of ripe yellow peach, hazelnut, and lemon zest, with hazy flint in the background. Crisp minerality and beams of acidity shine throughout. Simply divine.
