Azienda Agricola Paolo Bea sits in the hills around Montefalco, where the Bea family has lived and farmed since the 1500s. This is a true Umbrian fattoria, a place where vineyards, olive trees, orchards, grains, animals, and family life are woven together in a way that feels timeless. The estate carries a sense of continuity that is almost disarming, as if the land itself shapes the rhythm of each day. Paolo Bea’s conviction that nature should be observed, listened to, and never dominated gives the wines a presence that feels both ancient and deeply personal.
Today, Paolo’s sons, Giuseppe and Giampiero, carry that ethos forward with a devotion that can be felt in every bottle. The vineyards are tended with the same patience and humility that defined their father’s work, and the wines that emerge are unmistakably of this place. They are wild, expressive, full of pulse and emotion, and they remain some of the most meaningful bottles within our cellars, on our tables, and in our memories. These are wines that continually inspire us and create reference points vintage after vintage.
Rosso de Veo is the estate’s purest glimpse of young-vine sagrantino, drawn principally from parcels in the Cerrete vineyard, which rises from 1,300 to 1,500 feet above Montefalco. The soils here are a mix of clay and limestone threaded with small riverbed stones, giving the fruit both depth and lift. The cuvaison extends forty to fifty days, after which the wine rests for one year in stainless steel, two years in large oak botti, and a final year in bottle before release. It remains unfiltered, unhurried, and unmistakably Bea.
The 2018 Rosso de Veo is dark-fruited, structured, and expressive, showing blackberry, wild plum, dried cherry, balsamic tones, violets, sweet herbs, and warm earth. The aromatics rise with surprising freshness, even as the palate carries the robust tannins that are intrinsic to sagrantino. The wine’s energy keeps it vibrant and engaging, offering earlier approachability than Bea’s towering single-vineyard sagrantinos while still holding the depth and architecture to evolve beautifully over the next several years. It is a soulful and compelling expression of young-vine sagrantino, a wine that captures both the strength of the grape and the unmistakable hand of the Bea family.
