2018 Domaine Hauvette, Cuvée Amethyste, Les Baux-de-Provence, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

The 2018 Amethyste from Domaine Hauvette is a stunning ode to the elegance and versatility of Cinsault, a grape that rarely takes center stage but dazzles when treated with care. Crafted by Dominique Hauvette, one of France’s most revered winemakers and named "Winemaker of the Year" by La Revue du Vin de France in 2020, this biodynamic gem exemplifies the finesse and balance that define her approach.

Hailing from the dramatic foothills of the Alpilles in Provence, Amethyste is a blend of 80% cinsault, 10% grenache, and 10% carignan, grown biodynamically since 2003. The wine undergoes a gentle vinification process, including destemming and infusion of the berries, followed by aging in concrete eggs. This meticulous approach allows the wine to express its terroir with clarity and precision.

In the glass, Amethyste gleams with a light ruby hue, more evocative of a young pinot noir than a typical Provençal red. The nose is alive with aromas of juicy cherry, wild strawberry, and grenadine, interwoven with floral and mineral undertones. On the palate, it’s buoyant and lithe, offering a seamless balance of freshness, subtle structure, and a mouthwatering finish that invites sip after sip. It’s a wine of effortless drinkability yet profound character—a true showcase of Cinsault’s potential.
