2017 Domaine Robert Chevillon, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Les St Georges, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Domaine Robert Chevillon is a benchmark address in Nuits-Saint-Georges, run today by brothers Denis and Bertrand, the fifth generation of the family in these vineyards. The domaine covers roughly thirteen hectares of old vines across eight premier cru climats. The approach is traditional and meticulous: hand-harvested, fermented with careful temperature control, aged in French oak with a modest proportion of new barrels.

Les Saint-Georges is the crown jewel of Nuits-Saint-Georges, widely regarded as the commune’s finest vineyard and the site most often cited as deserving grand cru elevation. Chevillon’s parcel here, with some of the oldest vines in the domaine, yields pinot noir of exceptional depth and aromatic complexity from the southern slope of the appellation.

2017 brought relief after several difficult harvests in Burgundy, and this Les Saint-Georges captures both the vintage’s generosity and the vineyard’s gravity. Dark fruit — plum, black cherry, a hint of fig — layered with truffle, graphite, and a stony persistence that makes the case for grand cru status. Drinking beautifully now, with years still ahead of it.
