2022 Lionel Faury Saint-Joseph 'Les Ribaudes', Northern Rhone, FR

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

The Faury family has been in the hills of the Northen Rhone for generations, selling grapes, some wine, cherries and peaches. Lionel took over the project in 2006 striving to build off the work of his father, Philippe, and push the quality of the domaine even further. The winegrowing on these steep hills is only possible with extensive terracing. The exposure to the sun, the shallow granite soils, the fastidious farming, and the attention in the cellar brings wines of freshness, vibrancy, and youthful drinking in a region that has been known for needing long cellar aging before enjoyment.

Lionel brings in this fruit from the hillsides around La Ribaudy. He prefers concrete vessels for the fermentation and a wide variety of oak barrels for the aging with only a small portion being new—maybe 10%—on any year, and then blends to achieve the best expression of that particular vintage. The 2022 was fermented with 1/3 whole clusters.
