The Schätzel family has been farming the red slate slopes of the Roter Hang for over six centuries. Across generations, their philosophy has remained constant: “Give nature her space.” In practice, this means hand-farming steep, biodynamic vineyards, letting fermentations unfold on their own, and aging wines slowly, patiently, under the vaulted stone ceilings of their 800-year-old cellar.
Pettenthal is among the most dramatic sites on the Roter Hang. Picture a southeast-facing slope of iron-rich red slate tumbling toward the Rhine. Here, in a vineyard so steep it must be worked entirely by hand, the Schätzels craft one of the most striking Auslesen in Germany today.
Made from shriveled (but not botrytized) riesling berries, the 2023 Pettenthal Auslese balances remarkable concentration with crystalline tension. Whole-cluster pressed over 12 hours and fermented with native yeast, it was aged for eight months in used 600-liter barrels and bottled with 150–200 g/L of residual sugar.
The result is a wine of electric clarity and drive: mango coulis, preserved citrus, and crushed slate give way to a palate that is textured, lifted, and deeply resonant. This is a riesling that defies category being both decadent and precise, and unlike anything else on the hill.
