The Schätzel family has been farming vineyards along the Rhine for 650 years, drawn to the idea that wine could capture the essence of place. Today, their steep red slate vineyards on the Roter Hang yield wines of striking minerality and structure. “Give nature her space” is their guiding principle, and it shows in the calm, confident pace of their cellar and the quiet clarity of their wines.
This Kabinett is a playful, low-alcohol riesling with just a hint of sweetness to balance its vibrant acidity. Sourced from the estate’s biodynamically farmed vines on the Roter Hang, it’s bright and zesty, with notes of lemon peel, cassis, and crushed slate. The texture is soft but vivid, with a salty snap on the finish that keeps it lifted and fresh.
It’s the only wine in the lineup to receive a touch of sulfur, just enough to keep things crisp. The 2023 is also the first Demeter-certified vintage and comes dressed in a cheerful yellow label to match its mood.
Easy to love, hard to put down, we find ourselves reaching for this bottle more than we should admit!
