2023 Benoit Moreau, Chassagne-Montrachet, Clos St. Jean, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France - PRE ARRIVAL

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

After 22 vintages quietly shaping the wines at hi family’s Domaine Bernard Moreau, Benoît Moreau stepped into the spotlight in 2020 with a domaine of his own. He brought with him 4.2 hectares of prized vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. These are parcels he had farmed for decades, now tended biodynamically and entirely by hand, horse, or small tractor. A patient, intuitive grower, Benoît favors tressage over hedging, native yeasts over control, and time over intervention. His whites are pressed gently and raised over two winters with little new oak. His reds are perfumed, silken, and shaped by a light touch. The wines hum with clarity and quiet energy, an unmistakable signature from one of Burgundy’s most compelling new voices.

Clos St. Jean is one of Chassagne’s most recognizable premier crus, rising above the village and known for producing wines of breadth and generosity. But Benoît’s parcel, tucked into the vineyard’s northern section near Les Vergers, shows a different face. Here, old vines (planted over 60 years ago) dig into limestone-rich soils with less of the typical red clay, yielding a wine that is deep yet finely chiseled, with a mineral architecture that elevates its natural power.

Benoît converted this family-held site to organic farming long ago, and in 2023, as in most vintages, the production is heartbreakingly small. Just one barrel was made. No samples were shown, no critics invited. This is a wine for those who already understand what’s possible here, and what it means when a vigneron like Moreau decides to keep something quiet.
