2022 Terroir Sense Fronteres, Vertebra, Montsant, Spain - PRE ARRIVAL

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

94pts Wine Advocate

Terroir al Límit is one of the most compelling projects to emerge from Priorat in the past two decades. Founded in 2001 by Dominik Huber and South African winemaker Eben Sadie, the estate helped pioneer a gentler, more transparent vision for the region. From the beginning, the focus has been on farming by hand, following organic and biodynamic principles, and crafting wines that speak clearly of where they come from. In the cellar, whole-cluster fermentation, ambient yeasts, and aging in concrete or neutral foudres replace extraction and oak. Today, the wines are guided by Tatjana Peceric, whose thoughtful, intuitive style brings even more clarity and finesse to each cuvée.

The range has since expanded to include Terroir Sense Fronteres, a sister project across the DO border in Montsant. Here, Dominik and Tatjana explore the enormous potential of this overlooked region through old-vine garnacha grown high in the Montsant mountains. These wines are harvested early, fermented whole cluster, and aged entirely without oak to preserve freshness and finesse. Whether in Montsant or Priorat, the throughline is clear: a commitment to expression over intervention, and a belief that Mediterranean wines can be as graceful and terroir-driven as any in the world. Yes Society is proud to serve as the exclusive U.S. retailer for these wines.

High on the Montsant plateau near the village of La Figuera, old bush vines of garnatxa fina grow in red clay streaked with gypsum, rooted at 700 meters above sea level. The setting is dramatic, but the wine it yields is all grace and restraint. With its large berries and thin skins, garnatxa fina lends itself to a lighter, more lifted expression of grenache that draws comparisons to pinot noir, though it speaks with a distinctly Mediterranean voice.

Fermented whole cluster with native yeasts and aged entirely in concrete, Vertebra captures the tension and beauty of this late-ripening, high-altitude site. Aromas of blackberries, pomegranate, and forest herbs rise from the glass, followed by a palate that moves between smoky fruit, fine chalky grip, and a thread of mountain-cooled acidity running just beneath the surface. With structure, clarity, and vibrant energy, Vertebra is one of the most refined and compelling expressions of grenache anywhere in Spain.
