Few names in Italian wine command more reverence than Giacomo Conterno. Founded in the 1920s by Giacomo Conterno and later elevated by his son Giovanni, the estate set a new standard for traditional Barolo with the introduction of Monfortino, a wine that redefined what nebbiolo could become in the hands of a visionary. Giovanni’s powerful, long-aging Barolos became the benchmark for the region, and his decision to purchase the famed Cascina Francia vineyard in 1974 cemented the estate’s reputation as one of the Langhe’s greats.
Today, the legacy continues under Giovanni’s son Roberto Conterno. With the same uncompromising approach, Roberto has confidently expanded the estate’s holdings to include Cerretta and Arione, two of Serralunga d’Alba’s most prized crus. In the cellar, tradition remains paramount. Long macerations and extended aging in large casks are paired with meticulous farming and subtle technological improvements to preserve purity and precision. The result is a lineup of wines that are deeply rooted in place and tradition, as well as among the most profound expressions of Barolo being made today.
First bottled on its own in 2015, Arione is Conterno’s newest cru, though the site itself is anything but new. Bordering Francia along Serralunga’s southern ridge, it shares the same noble pedigree, powerful soils, and generous exposure, but speaks with its own distinct voice. The vineyard is sometimes included in Monfortino, a subtle nod to just how revered it has become.
The 2021 Arione is dark and soaring, with aromatics that lean into black cherry, violet, graphite, and wild herbs. There is volume and breadth, yet also lift and elegance. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity frame the fruit with authority, while the finish lingers on mineral and spice. This is a wine of intent and presence, etched with clarity.
"The 2021 Barolo Arione is a wine of exquisite finesse and elegance. The bouquet alone is immediately arresting. Then again, that is such an Arione signature. Sage, rose petal, mint, orange peel and dried flowers begin to emerge over time. Nearly seamless tannins and exceptional balance add to its total allure, while strong floral and savory accents punctuate the finish.” 97+ pts, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
