Founded in 1962 by André and Mireille Tissot, their namesake domaine has become one of the most dynamic estates in the Jura under the vision of their son Stéphane. After taking over in 1989 at the age of 19, Stéphane quickly abandoned commercial yeasts and led the move to organic farming, inspired in part by Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard. Certified organic in 1999 and biodynamic since 2004, the estate now farms with massale selections and deep attention to terroir, producing as many as 28 cuvées parcel by parcel. With Bénédicte by his side, Stéphane has helped lead the Jura’s dramatic resurgence.
The Jura itself is one of France’s most distinctive wine regions, a patchwork of limestone and marl soils nestled between Burgundy and Switzerland. Long known for its traditional styles, from oxidative whites to pale, perfumed reds, the region has become a hotbed of innovation while honoring centuries of history. Tissot stands at the forefront of this revival, showing just how compelling and diverse Jura wines can be.
From a south-facing vineyard planted between 1938 and 1973 on clay and blue marl, Les Bruyères is one of the domaine’s most emblematic wines. After hand harvest and direct pressing, the chardonnay ferments with native yeasts in Burgundy oak barrels (20% new) and then ages undisturbed on its lees for a full 24 months, a practice that builds both depth, precision and a distinction that is unmistakably “Jura.”
The 2022 vintage shows remarkable intensity and balance. Aromas of ripe orchard fruit mingle with subtle vegetal tones, lime, and a trace of smoke. On the palate, concentration and freshness intertwine, the fruit carried by acidity and a mineral backbone, with oak adding gentle depth rather than weight. A long, layered finish reveals hints of bitter citrus and savory spice, inviting another sip. Profoundly expressive of its terroir, Les Bruyères is both a powerful and precise chardonnay full of energy and longevity.
