His son André ran the domaine from 1969 to 1985 and began bottling some of the crop. Sylvain worked alongside his father, then struck out with a small domaine of his own on rented vines, and took back the family vineyards when André retired in 1995. Sébastien Cathiard joined in the mid-2000s after stints in Chablis, at Château Smith Haut Lafitte and in New Zealand, and 2011 was his first vintage at the helm. The domaine is still tiny, around five and a half hectares in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, with a parcel of Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts and a sliver of Romanée-Saint-Vivant that makes the family the smallest owner in that grand cru. Sébastien and his wife do the vineyard work themselves with a small team, farming organically without certification, and his one significant change in the cellar has been to reduce new oak across the range so that the sites speak more clearly. Fruit is fully destemmed after sorting, and the wines are known for purity, energy and depth of texture.

The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits comes from two and a half hectares at Villers-la-Faye, a blend of small parcels mostly within the lieu-dit Pièce Dame Marie, on deep clay above the Côte. Two-thirds of the vines were planted in 1973 and the rest in 2000, half of them high-trellised at 3,500 vines per hectare and half low-trellised at 10,000, the Burgundian density. The 2023 was fully destemmed and fermented twenty to thirty days in tank with indigenous yeasts and only five or six punch-downs in total, then aged fifteen to eighteen months in barrel with about twenty percent new oak. Sulfur is added only after malolactic fermentation.

The 2023 vintage gave the Hautes-Côtes a warm, ripe year in which the altitude kept the freshness that lower slopes had to work for. Raspberry, red cherry and cranberry come first, then violet, orange zest and a little forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied and fine-boned with supple tannins and bright acidity, and it carries the Cathiard signature of clarity and lift into a clean, persistent finish.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0779/1794/6152/files/SylvainCathiard_HautesCotesdeNuits_Burgundy_France.jpg?v=1789067281
