What began with great-grandfather Maurice tending a few humble vines on the village road has blossomed into one of France’s most respected winemaking legacies. Jean Vacheron was the first to see the poetry in the land’s contours, crafting wines that reflected the very soil beneath his feet. His sons, Denis and Jean-Louis, refined that vision, expanding the family’s talent beyond sauvignon blanc to reveal the hidden depths of pinot noir in this cherished terroir.

Today, the next generation—Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique—stewards the estate with a renewed sense of purpose, carrying the torch of biodynamic farming while charting new paths through the familiar landscapes their ancestors knew by heart. Their philosophy is simple but profound: nature speaks, and the winemaker’s task is to listen. The vineyards, planted and replanted by family hands over generations, are cultivated without synthetic interference, fertilized only by organic compost. Biodynamic rhythms guide both the vineyard and the cellar, where each vintage follows the phases of the moon, creating wines that are at once vibrant and timeless.

In white, that listening took the form of a project: beginning with Les Romains in 1997, the family started bottling individual parcels on their own, on the rationale that a Sancerre vineyard could be championed the way a Burgundian champions its climat. Les Garennes is barely more than an acre, a steep plot high on the hill facing due south, its clay heavy with iron over a subsoil of limestone, silex, and Cretaceous marl. The exposure and the altitude ripen the sauvignon blanc fully, and the cellar work is built to hold that ripeness in check rather than gild it. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts in large upright wooden tanks of 25 to 36 hectoliters, followed by a year of aging in the same wood and bottling without filtration.

Lemon zest and pith first, then crushed stone and a thread of smoke, with quince and green almond arriving behind them. The year in wood gives the palate breadth, but the finish narrows and turns saline, tasting of the rock it grew on. It will drink well for a decade from the vintage.
