2021 Jean Noel Gagnard, Chassagne-Montrachet, Blanchots-Dessus, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Though the estate is known by the name of her legendary father, Caroline L’Estimé has been running both the vineyard work and the winemaking since 1989 after graduating from business school in Paris. “My first decision was to vinify some plots separately,” she says. This decision has made her a legend in her own right, allowing for more nuanced terroir expression of the thriving landscape the family has so expertly stewarded for decades.

Blanchots Dessus, less than a minute walk from the Grand Cru Le Montrachet, is known for similarly weighty wines, but with sunnier fruit and astonishing freshness. 2021 was a famously low-yield year, but the wine that was made is a delight. Lemon zest and lemon blossom intermingle with honeysuckle and acacia honey, set off with flint and white peach. Opulent, but never overbearing, with river rock minerality woven throughout. Outstanding now, though patience in cellaring will be well-rewarded.
