2021 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Chambolle-Musigny, Les Fuées, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Frédéric Mugnier’s family has been making wine in Burgundy since the 1800s, but his first career was as an oil engineer. Since returning to the family business, his approach to farming and vinifying is heavily influenced by his scientific background. He hasn’t used industrial fertilizer since 1986 or herbicide since 1990, but he’s skeptical of labels like organic and biodynamic.

“Organic forces you to caricature and to make rigid decisions,” Frederic says. “My job as a wine grower, as an engineer, is to make choices among solutions that all have down sides.” His priority is always a pure expression of nature in the glass, unimpeded by ideology.

Les Fuées is an old Burgundian term referring to the amount of land that can be hoed by one person in one day. The vineyard Les Fuées is a little over 2/3 of a hectare, planted in 1960 on the northern slopes of the village of Chambolle. Its wines are some of the most singular and soulful within Chambolle-Musigny, marked by deeper notes of soil and darker berry notes.

Frederic’s wines are highly sought-after to begin with, but the spring frost this vintage allowed for only 25% of a typical yield. Notes of cracked white pepper and crushed gravel layered over orange blossom, clean wood smoke, and ripe blackberry in the 2021 vintage are as delicious as they are unforgettable. Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast all gave this a 91. We can’t wait for you to try it.
