Julien Bréchet took charge in 2006. Self-taught by his own account, he learned by doing at Pibarnon in Bandol and at Vaudieu, and he arrived with the conviction that Gigondas was not a single terroir but myriad. The 26 hectares of Gigondas vines form a rough circle around the cellar, spread across lieux-dits called Jasio, La Colline, Le Plateau, Les Bosquets, Roche, Les Routes and Les Blâches, each with its own geology and microclimate. Grenache makes up close to seventy percent of the plantings, the average vine age is now past fifty years, and the whole vineyard has been farmed organically, with certification in 2021, following biodynamic principles. A circular gravity-fed vat room was built in 1995, and in 2016 Julien added a parcel workshop for micro-vinification so that each site could be followed on its own. The result is a family of single-parcel Gigondas that critics have placed at the top of the appellation, and of the Southern Rhône.

Le Lieu-Dit was the first of those parcel wines, made since 2009, and it comes from old-vine grenache planted on sand right beside the winery. The parcel faces north and northwest at 210 meters and sits in a pocket of forest, a cool green enclosure against the mountains, so it ripens late and yields little, about sixteen hectoliters per hectare in an average year. The fruit ferments with indigenous yeasts and roughly thirty percent whole clusters, then ages eighteen months in neutral 600-liter demi-muids before a rest in concrete ahead of bottling. Production averages around 380 cases.

The 2021 vintage in the Southern Rhône was the cool one after a run of warm years, with an April frost that cut yields and a long, temperate season that kept alcohol moderate and acidity intact. In a parcel that already leans toward finesse, that translates into a Gigondas of unusual grace: wild strawberry, morello cherry and kirsch, then rose petal, licorice and the thyme and rosemary of the garrigue. The tannins are fine and cool, the fruit is translucent rather than heavy, and the finish is long and saline.
