2020 Sylvain Cathiard, Chambolle-Musigny, Les Clos De L'orme, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is beloved for silky and complex wines, with so much vitality that they nearly have a pulse. The family’s history in Burgundy began in the 1930s with Sylvain’s grandfather, a Savoie native. Since 2011, the estate has been run by Sylvain’s son Sebastien, who prioritizes organic practices in the vineyard (though he’s not interested in certification) and a hands-off approach in the cellar, with far less new oak than is the norm.

Though 2020 was an extreme vintage, the wines themselves are fresh and harmonious. 2020 Les Clos De L’orme, from a lieu-dit in Chambolle-Musigny whose oldest vines are nearly 90 years old, received a 90-92 score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Both sleek and succulent, with characteristic tart red fruit, as well as violet, ripe figs, star anise, and a touch of lavender. A kiss of cedar smoke on the finish, wrapped up in powdery tannins. Lovely and quite special.
