2020 Domaine de la Grange des Pères, Blanc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault, Languedoc Roussillon, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Laurent Vaillé at the helm of Domaine de la Grange des Pères managed to build a cult winery out of a maligned location. He spent his early career gaining experience with some of the greatest vignerons: Jean-François Coche-Dury in Meursault, Gérard Chave in Hermitage, and Eloi Durrbach at Domaine Trévallon in Provence. Laurent settled in the l’Hérault of the Languedoc and purchased his own land in 1989. He chose land on limestone with scarce, poor soil, and sourced Syrah, Marsanne and Rousanne cuttings from Gérard Chave and Cabernet from Trévallon. His south-facing vines yield very little but are characterized by an expressive restraint that is somehow undergirded with palpable power. “Nature gave us a partition of land. It is up to us to interpret it.”

With Vaillé's passing, these wines have become even more scarce, and we are approaching the last of his vintages. This syrah-blend is a masterclass in why he garnered such an impressive following, standing alone in the Languedoc for his vision and age-worthy offerings.
