Marc took the reins from his father Henri in the early 1980s. Le Gréal is the flagship red, its name a portmanteau of the two parcels that comprise it: Les Greffieux and Le Méal. Le Méal contributes the lion’s share, from vines planted around 1926 on steep terrain where the soils shift between granite, limestone, sand, and clay in complex layers. The wine is whole-cluster fermented and aged in used French oak for up to two years. Production hovers around 200 cases.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2016 comes from the final stretch of Marc Sorrel’s tenure at the estate. His son Guillaume would take over after the 2018 vintage, bringing his own refinements. But the 2016 is a pure expression of the father’s hand: predominantly syrah with a small proportion of marsanne, shaped by the brooding depth of Le Méal and the finesse of Les Greffieux.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWidely praised across the Northern Rhône, this Le Gréal carries the hallmarks of a Marc Sorrel wine: power married to elegance. Approaching a decade of age, it is beginning to open while still holding potential.
