2015 Domaine Patrick Baudouin, Quarts de Chaume, Les Zersilles, Grand Cru, Loire Valley, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Patrick Baudouin says that he “gives birth to wines, [he does] not fabricate them.” He has 13 hectares of vineyards on the great terroirs of the Anjou Noir. The vineyards face south and are bordered to the southwest by the rise of the Massif Vendeen which deflects incoming Atlantic rainfall, though not humidity. The vineyards with little rain between two rivers create some of the most ideal conditions for botrytis and most vintages it is there. The vineyards are certified organic. The chenin blanc grapes are harvested late when their sugar levels are high. Fermentations take place using indigenous yeasts with no chaptalization, and the addition of minimal amounts of sulfur. Patrick Baudouin’s off-dry wines have become respected as some of the greatest in the world!

2015 Domaine Patrick Baudouin, Quarts de Chaume, Les Zersilles, Grand Cru, Loire Valley, France is a late harvest chenin that radiates with layer over layer of glistening acacia honey, cloves, thyme, ginger, quince paste: all rotating as though you are somehow in a loom’s center, the flavors turning in their brilliance, forming around you! The wine is held taut by a playful and elegant acidity and the sweetness is lush and fresh and never cloying.
