2005 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-Musigny, Les Cras, 1er Cru, Burgundy, France

We come together around the idea of saying “yes”: A small word that contains everything.

Masterfully stewarding nearly 6 hectares in Chambolle-Musigny, Ghislaine Barthod is a third-generation winemaker whose meticulous work in both the cellar and the vineyard has earned a sterling reputation. Importer Neal Rosenthal calls her “a standard bearer for the great wines of Chambolle Musigny.”

For those with a fondness for the famously structured, floral wines of Chambolle-Musigny, Barthod’s Les Cras is a lightning bolt, a revelation. On the nose, thunderous notes of dark berries and ripe stone fruit. On the palate, they’re joined by notes of wet soil, Darjeeling tea, and soft minerality. Powerful, without eschewing the signature elegance of Chambolle. The 2005, which received a 95 from Wine Advocate, has a youthful muscularity belying its age. A fantastic conversation piece to open now, but sublime past 2030.
